Who am I?

I was born in Hong Kong, a bustling city that never sleeps. When I was growing up everywhere I looked there was something happening. Millions of people filing their way through the gaps of skyscrapers and the traffic, the interplay between old and new, rich and poor, the people and the urban landscape build on a hilly Island has been burned into my subconscious. It seemed that everywhere I looked there was a picture waiting to be taken. Except I didn’t have a camera. 20 years after I left Hong Kong to come to England, I finally owned a ‘proper’ camera.
When I take a photograph, I try to retain the aliveness of Hong Kong. Even though the photograph is still, there is a sense of movement, a feeling that it’s going somewhere, a frame within a movie. Taking candid pictures in the midst of movement in the most alive way possible against an urban landscape or arena is my ideal scenario. Thus, my love for sports or concert or urban landscape photography.

Within the last 4 years, I have become the one of the principle photographers for my martial arts club, Bob Breen Academy, one of the pioneers in martial arts in Europe. As well photography I film and edit his online program 4D combat.

Magical moments that I as the organiser or any of our participants many miss show up in Tom’s images.
The images tom captures reminds you just how you felt at that moment.

Thanks again Tom.

Tom Smart photographed a dance performance for the Chantraine Dance of Expression in 2019. The programme was danced by approximately 30 dancers aged between 4 and 70 years old. As soon as Tom arrived at the venue of the performance, he assessed the light and space, consulted me on what my requirements were and started shooting. Tom captured the event from start to finish, photographing not only the entire programme of dance but also the preparations of the dancers, capturing moments between dancers and interactions with their teacher. Within days of the event, Tom had edited and produced over 50 photographs of the performance. The dance school focuses on the expression of the dancer and what each individual brings to each choreography. Tom was able to capture fantastic group shots with dynamic and static positioning as well as stunning photographs of individuals. Tom used the lighting in the venue and the colour of the costumes to enhance of the photographs which looked of the highest quality on-line and in print.
